"Garden for Children" installing Part2
Wirksworth Festival was finished on Sep 26 in UK, and "Garden for Children" was finished on Oct 3 in Tokyo. I finished de-installation of both exhibitions too.
Thank you very much if you came and see them.

Now, the rest of the last blog.

They are the mirrors which is like button badges but backside is mirror instead of pin. They look like biscuits in plastic bags.
I searched same kind of products as I used in UK last year in Japan and I ordered them in Japan, but they were not exactly same and it caused a big problem afterwards, but I write about it later.

Volunteers of students from Hosei University and Tsukuba University helped me to put mirrors in.
We were putting round mirrors into square sewn pockets one by one by hands. These pockets were sewn as small as possible but just you can put them in so that they don't pop out, so it's not very easy and it takes time to get the trick.
It's very hard on fingers as we needed to do taping on fingers, but they worked very hard bearing with sore fingers.

Now the spotlight is installed.

It's almost half way.
It took about one and half day.

It's not finished yet, but we checked how it looks like when we had a break.
The spotlight was turned on, and the ceiling light in the room was turned off, then the voice rose "Woooow".
It pays off our patient labor work.

Almost there.

Edges of the fabric get tucked underneath and sticked onto the floor with double-sided tape in the end,

and finished.

I planned to have 5 days for this work, but it took only about 3 and half days because volunteers of students did a good job.

The day of the opening came finally on July 23.

There was a ceremony and we all artists put a floral decoration on chest like an entrance ceremony of elementary school.

This is the remake of video installation 'lines' that I made original one in 2004.
Animation of black and white lines move vertically and horizontally, spin, expand and shrink.

People can walk on the mat and reflections of the light move in conjunction with peoples motion.

Works were well received.
It was interesting to see reactions of people like an adult gingerly stepping into, a child bubbling over or an adult playing around like a little kid.

But

a problem arose.

Some mirrors were broken.

I had to stay there all the time to replace the broken mirrors that day.

I took apart one of the mirror button and found out the mirror inside was much thinner than the ones I used in UK. It was not thick enough for this piece.
I still regret that I didn't check it before I ordered them.
First I did for emergency treatment was to buy some slippers and make people wear them on the mat for security and it makes less broken mirrors, and I came to the museum after it's closed every day to cover the mirrors with transparent tape one by one so that broken pieces don't scatter.
We eventually had to replace all the mirrors to ones which don't break so easily because the show had to go on over 2 months, but they are quite expensive and I had no idea what to do.. However, the number of visitors were much more than expected and they got more budget because tickets were selling well, so we were able to replace all the mirrors to acrylic mirrors three weeks after the show started. They were a bit easy to get small scratches comparing to glass mirror, but there was none broken until the end of the exhibition afterwards.

Although there was an influence of the another exhibition held in the museum at the same time, they had a lot more visitors than they usually do in curated exhibitions. It was over 80,000 total in the end.
It was quite hard and difficult all through the planning, preparation, producing and maintenance, but I learned a lot from it and it was good that so many people came to see my works and enjoyed them.

I will update the work pages when I receive pictures from the photographer.

"Garden for Children" installing Part1
It's only about a week left of "Garden for Children" that was over 2 months.
I heard it's very popular and the number of visitors is much more than expected.
Thank you very much if you came to see it.
Please don't miss it if you didn't yet.

By the way, I came to UK for an art festival called "Wirksworth Festival" last month, and I'm writing this blog here in England.
I'm showing three works here, two existing works and one new work.
So now it's total 5 works exhibited including 2 in Tokyo at the same time. It's rare for me.
I will write about the exhibition here in UK later on, but I think I write about the installation of "Garden for Children" this time as continued from last blog.

The gallery space is still empty.

Taping masking tape after marking the position.

Taping in grid, and double-sided tape on top of it.

I was working with the installation company called "Super Factory".

Placing 32 foam mats.

I ordered 32 of same sized mats, but they were slightly bigger or smaller, thicker or thinner, so we had to organize them to fit in.

Taping the gap with double-sided tape and gum tape,

and covering it over with synthetic cottony sheet called foam wadding which is often used for quilt or something.

This makes it more cushioned and reduces friction with foam mats.

Now it's time to put the cloth and to put the mirrors in.

Starting from the edge and spreading the cloth little by little.

The number of the mirror is 7744!

To be continued.

Working in progress thereafter
I've finally finished sewing 64 units of the piece I've been working on.

It's like this when they are piled up.

I sewed them together and made one big sheet. It was quite hard to do because it's massive.

It was almost like wrestling with a black monster.

It looks like this when it's spread.

It's a sweaty heavy labor just to spread and fold it.

It's heavy as 27kg.

It set off for the museum on 5th July.

I'm installing it at the site now.

Wirksworth Festival
I participated Wirksworth Festival in Wirksworth, Derbyshire in United Kingdom last autumn. I'm going to participate again this year in the curated exhibition.
I'm planning to show last year's piece 'cube ring' again, also another past work and a new work.

2010.5.17
Working in progress
This is the material I'm using for work now.

I got two rolls of 150cm width fabric.
It's about 85m in total.
I bought them in Nippori textile town in Tokyo.
They are quite heavy. Big roll weighs about 30kg.
It was impossible to bring them back home, so they were delivered to my studio.

It's kind of exciting to buy a lot of material at once like this.

Next is tools I'm using.

This is a handmade template I specially created for this work.

I cut out slits on a plastic sheet for marking and cutting.
This makes my work much more efficient because I have to repeat making same thing so many times and I don't have to measure it each time.

The green cutting mat you can see under the template is also one of very important tools.

Because

I cut the fabric along the X-figured slits on the template by this rotary cutter.

There are 11x11 rows, then 121 squares in total on one sheet, so this template and the rotary cutter are crucial.
There are various different types of rotary cutters, but this one fits very well on hand and easier to use comparing to others.

I'm using this for marking.

This is chalk for marking on fabric.

I didn't know this kind of thing existed until recently.
It's almost same as water-based ball point pen, but you can erase lines with heat of iron as it's named "iron chalk pen".
It's very handy for marking thin and sharp lines.
I was using pencil type ones before and I had to sharpen them very often, so this is very good.
However the ink goes very quickly, so I need a lot of them.

It looks like this after cutting and marking.

I'm going to fold those X-cut parts and sew the edges.

This is the sewing machine I'm using.

I clamped small pieces of wood on the table so that it doesn't move when I'm sewing.

I don't write the name of the product here because I don't like this blog becomes like an advertisement of goods (you can still see the maker's name on the photo). Anyway, this sewing machine which is not so professional, house-use and compact is kind of extraordinary.

The cover on left side turns into an extension of the table.
It's very helpful for sewing flat and large things.

The center part is a small storage box.

I bought a lot of threads too.

They are industrial-use and one roll is 2000m.
I bought 6 rolls, so it's 12000m in total.
It sounds like a long-distance running.
I roughly calculated length before I bought them, but I calculated again with actual number I'm using after I started sewing. It seems they aren't enough.

It's a long way.

You can't really tell the size of the roll in the picture above..

It's big.

I can't put it on the thread stand on the sewing machine, so I'm using a special stand.

It looks like this after the first round of sewing.

Front side looks

like this.

I put another piece of fabric of same size and sew them together.

I sewed this much so far.

I will sew this units together and make one big sheet later.

Now I'm using third roll of thread.

I'm not writing here how many more dozens of sheets I have to make...

It seems like I still have a long way to go.

Bamboo shoot
Now I have the new camera, I think I will try to update my blog more often.
Yesterday, when I went to pay rent to my landlord, he asked me "Do you want any bamboo shoot?" I answered "Yes." Then he said "Put those boots on."
So suddenly I happened to go to pick bamboo shoots.
The house of my landlord is just behind of the building of my studio, and there is a bamboo forest next to it. He had given me some bamboo shoots around this season before, but this was first time to go and pick them myself.

I put rubber boots on, had a hoe in my hand, and went to pick bamboo shoots with him. He sometimes picks about 20 bamboo shoots in a day and gives them to relatives and acquaintances. He said he had picked them quite a lot already this year and he was a bit tired, so he made me to do it.
I dug the ground and picked three, and sent two to my parents in Hokkaido. (We don't have bamboo in north of Japan.)

I went straight to cook them for dinner.

I used tip part and made sashimi for first day.

It was very fresh and soft. It went well with wasabi and soy sauce.

I cooked two things on second day. One is cooked with soup with soy sauce, sake, mirin and sugar. The other is cooked with rice.

I enjoyed the taste of the season.

I think I will write about my work I'm working on at this moment in next blog.

New Camera
My old digital camera got soaked by rain and broken when I was traveling, and I got insurance for it, so I went ahead and bought a new camera.
The model is OLYMPUS PEN Lite.

I had only a film-based single-lens reflex camera for photographing my work, so I had to borrow a camera when I wanted to photograph my work with hight quality digital camera. Even when I photographed with films, I always had to scan and digitalize them, so I had been thinking I wanted to get a digital single-lens reflex camera one day. Although it might be useful for my work, I was not sure about it because it's so big and heavy, and not so easy to carry around for everyday use or traveling. But after some research, I found cameras so called 'micro single-lens reflex'. They are much smaller and lighter than normal one and it seemed easier to carry.
Actually I found this camera not because I was looking for small camera, but when I was searching about digital camera with function of high definition video. I thought it was perfect the quality is as good as normal single-lens reflex camera and small, moreover it can make high definition movie.
About recording of my work again, I always need video too, and I had been using old video camera I bought 9 years ago. So I had been thinking I should change it to HD quality soon. I've read that the quality of video is also very good comparing to normal video camera because the lens of single-lens reflex camera is high quality.
It was lovely weather on the day I got the camera, and cherry blossoms were full bloom in neighbor, so I went out and took some photos.

More details of "Garden for Children"
Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo had published the year schedule for 2010. There are more details of the exhibition "Garden for Children" there, so I update it here too.

Garden for Children
An exhibition for the enjoyment of all, from infants and toddlers to adults, Garden for Children will celebrate the perceptual powers and mindscape of small children. Featured are hands-on interactive and physically immersive works, newly created by emerging artists, each of which gives orchestration to an entire space.
By enabling adults to share a world of art together with children and experience it vicariously through their viewpoint, physical sensations, and feelings, the exhibition will provide occasions for communication among people of different generations and for considering and rediscovering our own relationship with art.
Participating artists: Goh Ideta, Mikiko Endo, Shinji Ohmaki, KOSUGE1-16, Saki Satom
Jul.24(Sat)-Oct.3(Sun)
closed on Mondays
except Aug.16, Sep. 20 / Closed on Sep.21

Renewal!
I renewed my website.
The design was entirely changed and some new works were added on the page of works.
I'm going to update more works from 2008 and 2009 soon.
I renewed the blog as well, but ones from 2004 until 2009 are still accessible. I'm sorry most of them are only in Japanese.
The old version had been accessible for a while, but I've closed it now.
